Annemiek van Vleuten suffered an horrific crash while leading the Olympic Games women’s road race. The Dutch cyclist was the latest victim of the terrifying descent that killed Vincenzo Nibali’s hopes of gold in the men’s race yesterday.
Van Vleuten was negotiating a tight right-hander when she went head over heels. She landed with her head in the gutter off the side of the road and was motionless after the crash.
