Valverde to lead Spain in Rio Olympics
Alejandro Valverde will represent Spain in the road race at the Rio Olympic Games held in the next month. The Movistar rider will lead the selection.
Valverde will be joined by Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha Team) and three teammates: Imanol Erviti, Ion Izaguirre and Jonathan Castroviejo. The last two will compete in the individual time trial.
Former Tour de France winner Alberto Contador, who is recovering from injuries suffered in the Tour de France, was not nominated.
Valverde has competed in the Olympics in 2004, 2008 and 2012, never finishing higher than 13th. Castroviejo finished ninth in the time trial in London 2012.
