Hayman to help Matthews in Brabantse Pijl

Paris-Roubaix winner, Matthew Hayman, will quickly be back in the saddle for Brabantse Pijl this Wednesday. This race will be the last of the Flanders classics which started with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in February.

Hayman will ride tomorrow in support of Michael Matthews who is one of the favorites for the 205 KM classic near Brussels. Matthews is certainly aiming for a big win in Amstel Gold Race this Sunday, after his podium last year. However, he will also be interested in improving on his second place in the 2015 edition of Brabantse Pijl.

“Branbanste used to be held before the Tour of Flanders,” explained Orica sport director Laurenzo Lapage. “Since 2010 it’s been held before Amstel Gold and used as preparation for the Ardennes classics, which is exactly what we will be doing.¬†Michael (Matthews) will be our leader and we have a strong team around him. It is really good to have our road captain Mathew [Hayman] back in the team for this race, his experience will be important, especially for the younger guys.”

Hayman suffered from a fractured radius which he sustained in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and had to train hard on the home trainer in order to be in form for the Classics. Paris-Roubaix was just his third race after coming back from injury, but it proved to be a great one.

Orica-GreenEdge line-up for Brabantse Pijl/La Fleche Brabanconne: Jack Haig, Mathew Hayman, Damien Howson, Daryl Impey, Jens Keukeleire, Cheung King Lok, and Michael Matthews.
