Cancellara quicker than Tony Martin in Volta ao Algarve time trial

Two of the peloton’s top time trial riders crossed swords in the first major individual test of 2016, and Trek – Segafredo’s Fabian Cancellara prevailed over Etixx – Quick-Step’s Tony Martin — but only by a margin of five seconds. The Swiss veteran, a four-time world TT champ, claimed his second victory of the season in Volta ao Algarve’s stage 3 time trial in Sagres, Portugal.

Overnight race leader Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) was forced to abandon the race after crashing while trying to defend his jersey.

Tony Martin moved into the race lead over Thomas. Thanks to a strong performance in the mountains on stage 2, the German started the day 25 seconds out of the race lead, but put 23 seconds into Thomas to lead by three seconds on GC. Movistar’s Ion Izagirre is third overall at 20 seconds.
