British cyclist dies in Duo Normand after collision with support vehicle

Svein Tuft and his Orica-BikeExchange teammate Luke Durbridge claimed their third victory at the Duo Normand, an 54 km two-man time trial event held in France.

The win was overshadowed by the tragic death of 61-year-old amateur cyclist Ian Bashford from London. Bashford was participating in the event when he was hit by a support vehicle just 50 m from the finish line.

His teammate, Peter Grey was not struck by the vehicle. French media are reporting that an investigation is underway into the collision with the 27-year-old male driver having been transported to hospital in a state of shock following the incident.

Bashford was declared dead on the scene of the accident an race organizers considered cancelling the event but in agreement with the deceased’s cycling club, the race was continued in his memory and to honor him.
