Bradley Wiggins shows off new cycling shoes inspired by The Jam’s Paul Weller
If you thought it was only footballers who wore garish footwear, think again. Sir Bradley Wiggins has posted his new ‘Wham Rickenbacker’ tribute shoes for next week’s Tour of California.
Fans of the pop art movement will recognise them as a section of Roy Lichtenstein’s ‘Wham!’ painting from 1963. The design on the Giro Empire shoes has been done by Jimbo Phillips (link is external), best known as a skateboard artist.
But Wiggins’ shoes are actually intended as a tribute to Paul Weller. The Jam frontman used a Lichtenstein-inspired Rickenbacker guitar in the past and Wiggins is a huge fan of Weller.
Whether others are fans of the shoes, is another question.
