Atapuma wins the first mountain stage in Tour de Suisse
Darwin Atapuma (BMC) won stage 5 at Tour de Suisse holding off the late pursuit of Warren Barguil (Giant-Alpecin). Pierre-Roger Latour (AG2R La Mondiale) moves into the yellow jersey of race leader after placing third on the stage.
It was a day of redemption for Atapuma, who dedicated the win to his late mother, after a string of near-misses at the Giro d’Italia.
Atapuma formed part of a strong 24-rider breakaway after 20 kilometers of racing. As the breakaway reached the final climb of the day, it was down to a small group of riders to battle it out on the climb. The Colombian rider attacked solo with six kilometers to go, and managed to hold off the General Classification group who were closing in, in the final hundred meters.
Tejay Van Garderen (BMC) finished strongly to take 4th ahead of Wilco Kelderman (LottoNl-Jumbo), a further two seconds back, while Geraint Thomas (Sky) and Andrew Talansky (Cannondale) came home at 12 seconds. Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida) crossed the line with Astana pair Michele Scarponi Miguel Angel Lopez, 16 seconds down, but the young french rider Pierre-Roger Latour is the new overall leader.
