United Kingdom Anti-Doping (UKAD) is investigating Sir Bradley Wiggins and Team Sky for an “allegation of wrongdoing in cycling” during the 2011 season.

It is one specific event that is being investigated by the anti-doping authorities. Just after winning the 2011 Dauphine Libere, a medical package was delivered to Team Sky officials.

The report claims that a package was taken by plane to Geneva and then driven to France by a Team Sky medical official. The package was allegedly delivered to the team in France on June 12 of 2011, just ahead of the start of the Tour de France.

The newspaper says that British Cycling and Team Sky haven’t identified what was in the package, but insist that it was not triamcinolone acetonide, a banned substance that Wiggins has used by obtaining a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) for asthma treatment.

“UK Anti-Doping is investigating an allegation of wrongdoing within cycling. In order to protect the integrity of the investigation, we will not comment further,” says UKAD in a short statement.

Simon Cope, former rider and current boss at Team Wiggins, flew to Geneva with the medication package, where he took a car to La Toussuire, delivered it and returned to the United Kingdom immediately. The UKAD is now trying to confirm the contents and whether it was requested by doctor Richard Freeman for Wiggins.

In a statement on Friday, Team Sky say they are confident there has been no wrongdoing: “Team Sky was contacted by the Daily Mail regarding an allegation of wrongdoing. We take any issues such as this very seriously and immediately conducted an internal review to establish the facts. We are confident there has been no wrongdoing.

“We informed British Cycling of the allegation and asked them to contact Ukad, who we will continue to liaise with. Team Sky is committed to clean competition. Our position on anti-doping is well known and we 100% stand by that.”
