Reports from Italian newspaper La Stampa suggest Giro d’Italia organiser RCS Sport is working on a deal to bring the 2018 Big Start to Japan.

The Italian Grand Tour is never averse to taking the opening stages out of its home country, beginning this year’s race in the Netherlands, in Belfast in 2014 and in Denmark in 2012, among others.

Giro could start in Japan, with four stages held in the Shizuoka area east of Tokyo, including one that climbs Mount Fuji –the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776 metres.

Mauro Vegni, Giro d’Italia race director, would have to request from the UCI for the race to have two consecutive rest days in order to bring the race back to Italy after stage four. This would be in order to ensure the riders and staff were not suffering from jetlag after the 14-hour flight.

This year the riders were given a rest day after stage three as the race transferred from Arnhem to Catanzaro in the south of Italy.
