Deer leaps straight into cyclist in the middle of triathlon

There are so many things to contend with when you’re doing a triathlon – muscle cramps, getting a stitch, over-enthusiastic deer bounding towards you…

One competitor was pictured tumbling off his bike during the event in Dublin after a fallow buck tried to leap clean over him. Unfortunately the jump wasn’t as graceful as the deer had hoped, and cyclist Shane O’Reilly was knocked into the road in Phoenix Park.

O’Reilly told Irish broadcaster RTÉ that although his helmet was cracked, he managed to carry on and finish the race. “The helmet definitely saved me,” he said. “Apart from that, my shoulder was a bit sore and I had a headache.”

Despite the unexpected collision, O’Reilly still completed the race in two hours and 25 minutes. Photographer Erik Scraggs, who took the photos, told the BBC he was totally taken aback by the deer’s attempted leap.

‘I never envisaged that they would actually try and leap over the cyclists,’ he said. ‘It all happened so fast, it was a really heavy crash.’

Fortunately, both the cyclist and the deer have recovered.
