Wanting the Italian team to build on the success of the 2015 Giro d’Italia, the Lampre Merida general manager, Giuseppe Saronni, considers recruiting Alberto Contador for 2017 season.
Alberto Contador, who has won all three Grand Tours, has recently stressed his desire to continue riding beyond the current year, alerting a host of interested parties.
“We’ve already had some contact [with Contador],” Saronni confessed. “Who wouldn’t be interested in someone like Alberto? It won’t be easy but we can try.”
With four stage wins in last year’s race, Lampre Merida will be hoping to repeat this type of performance, even if their form in 2016 hasn’t quite lived up to expectations thus far.
“We’ve missed something so far this year, and we’ve had some injuries. However, we’ve looked to prepare as best as possible for the key moments and, the Giro d’Italia is one of these.”, said Saronni for Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Giro will start on May 6, the first stage taking place in the Netherlands.
