Pierre Latour wins on Alto de Aitana as Quintana seals overall victory

Nairo Quintana is set to win the Vuelta a Espana after holding off Chris Froome’s challenge on Alto de Aitana. The Colombian, 26, leads Froome by one minute 23 seconds with only Sunday’s processional stage into Madrid to come.

Froome attacked Quintana repeatedly as the pair climbed Alto de Aitana together but was unable to break free of the Movistar rider.

The stage was won by French rider Pierre Latour of Ag2r-La Mondiale. The 22-year-old outsprinted Colombia’s Darwin Atapuma (BMC) at the summit.

The win will be Quintana’s second in a Grand Tour – his maiden success came in the 2014 Giro d’Italia. Quintana’s compatriot Estaban Chaves (Orica Bike Exchange) will complete the podium places in general classification after overhauling Spain’s Alberto Contador (Tinkoff).
