Alexandre Geniez (FDJ) held off an attack by the GC favorites on a brutal final climb to win the third stage of the Vuelta a Espana 2016.

Spaniard Ruben Fernandez, who led a late charge by Movistar that shook up the times among the contenders, crossed 21 seconds later and took the overall lead. Alejandro Valverde was third, just ahead of Chris Froome and fellow race rivals Esteban Chaves and Nairo Quintana.

Three-time Vuelta winner Alberto Contador couldn’t stay with that bunch on the last ascent, which had a gradient that reached 30 percent, leaving him further behind in the overall standings.

Fernandez faces another very stern test in tomorrow’s fourth stage which has another summit finish. After a flat start, the riders will tackle two category 3 climbs in the first half before they get to a flatter second half. In the finale, they will tackle the final category 2 which averages 4.8% over 11.2km but has some steeper sections near the top.
