Roubaix Lille Metropole have sadly announced that their rider Daan Myngheer has passed away from a heart attack that he suffered in the first stage of the Criterium International.
The Belgian rider had lost contact with the peoloton in the last 25 KM of stage 1. The medical staff quickly made contact with him and he had a heart attack in the ambulance taking him to Ajaccio. As a result, he was firstly placed on life support and then placed into an induced coma at the hospital.
Roubaix Lille Metropole made the announcement of his death on their Facebook page, saying that Myngheer had passed away Monday night and that he has donated his vital organs:
“It is with great emotion that we announce the death of Daan. He lost his last race after struggling as a great champion,” the statement said. “He died this Monday, March 28 at 7:08 p.m. in the presence of his parents, his sister Fleur Emely and her companion in the hospital of Ajaccio.
All our thoughts, sincere will to parents, his sister Fleur Emely as well as to the whole family.
Rest in Peace Champion.”
Sadly, Myngheer`s death is the second one of the Easter weekend following the death of Antonie Demoitié after being hit by a motorcycle during Gent-Wevelgem.
Daan Myngheer was a former junior Belgian champion in 2011 and died aged 22. He would have been 23 on April 13th.
